what to expect during a consultation
When you attend for treatment, the starting point is the
initial assessment. This is an extremely important part of the treatment process. Essentially it is a process that is followed in order to make a diagnosis i.e. to make a decision about what is wrong and to create a treatment plan that is appropriate for your condition.Subjective assessment is the initial question answer part. Before actually examining an injured area, it is important to understand the story of the presenting condition. That is to have an idea of what the client is really complaining about, the exact area of symptoms, the way it behaves during the day. Of importance, is to understand the causative incident, if any. When the bits of the story fall onto place, more often than not, we have an idea of what we are looking for in the physical examination. For a simple condition with no past history, the subjective examination may take 10 minutes, with a recurring or chronic condition, it may take much longer.
Objective assessment
is the physical testing.By analysing the results of these tests, we can gain an understanding of the cause of the complaint and go on to formulate a treatment plan that is appropriate for you
The treatment options will be discussed with you after your assessment. Treatment will normally commence immediately.

Since qualifying in 1986, I have had a keen interest in the use of complementary therapies in the form of approaches to natural healing. Following my physiotherapy training, I became a 'Touch for health' instructor. This is an approach to natural health aimed at improving postural balance and reducing muscle tension. It uses predominantly acupressure and massage. I then went on to study acupuncture. I have a keen interest in treating sporting injuries. I worked at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club for 3 years and was still not put off completely!!!!!!!! Until recently, I was on staff with the British Orienteering Squad with whom I travelled on both domestic training weekends in the UK as well as to European Competitions. I also attempt to stay a reasonably competitive athlete. I have a strong leaning towards searching for structural anomalies which predispose people to injury, rather than just looking at a straight lesion based approach. I have found that this is a far more wholistic and more importantly, effective in the medium / long term. In complementary medicine terms, this type of approach is more and more commonly referred to now as a structural energetic approach or an approach aimed at addressing the structural integrity of the system. In therapy, my tendency is to recommend a combination of physiotherapy and acupuncture techniques, rather than using them separately, as well as looking at strategies for self help. This may include exercise and instruction in self treatment techniques as well as making an attempt to help the client improve their awareness of what is going on in their own body. |
